Frequently Asked Questions

Knowledge is power. The higher your rate per mile, the more money you will make for the trip. But you need data to negotiate from a place of strength.

All loads are subject to supply and demand, seasonality, and other factors that affect rates. But in general, some types of freight pay more than others. If you’re looking for the highest overall rates per mile, consider earning the endorsements you need for ice road trucking, HAZMAT, oversized freight, or other specialty loads.

Your base rate is what you need to earn per mile to break even. To find it, you will need to add up all of your fixed expenses per month, such as truck payments, insurance, and permits. You’ll need to account for your variable costs, such as maintenance, taxes, and meals on the road. Divide your expenses by the average number of miles you drive per month to find your base rate. Anything you earn over your base rate is profit.
