National Truck Driver Appreciation Week 2026: Rockstars of the Road

The coffee at the counter this morning got there on a truck. So did the fuel in the tank, the produce in the store, and the box on the porch. Behind every one of those was a driver who left home days ago and planned a route around parking, weather, and a delivery window that would not move.

National Truck Driver Appreciation Week runs September 13 to 19, 2026. Now in its 38th year, the week is organized by the American Trucking Associations as a national thank-you to the professional drivers who keep the country stocked and moving.

Why the week matters

Every year, drivers move more than 11 billion tons of freight across the country, according to American Trucking Associations data. Behind that total are millions of individual runs, each one a driver choosing to show up.

The reach is bigger than the number sounds. The American Trucking Associations reports that more than 80% of U.S. communities depend on trucks alone for their freight, with no rail line or barge to fall back on. Roughly 3.6 million professional drivers carry that load.

You are hiring a person, not a truck

The rockstars of the road are the ones in the driver’s seat.

Skill, judgment, and the calls made at 2 a.m. in bad weather all come from the driver. The truck only moves because someone capable is running it.

Jamie Hagen, owner of Hell Bent Xpress and a driver himself, explained it best on a recent episode of Truckstop’s Behind the Freight podcast.

“Trucking is a service job, what the customer pays for is the driver, and the truck is just the tool. Some people get that backwards and focus solely on the trucks, but what you’re really buying is the person and their time.”

Anyone who has been treated like a seat number instead of a professional knows the difference that view makes. Good equipment helps a driver do the job. Being treated like a person is what keeps them doing it.

What the job actually asks

The job asks for things most people never see. A driver’s day does not end when the freight comes off the trailer. The day often ends an hour later, after a search for a legal place to park for the night.

A single week on the road can include:

• Detention time that runs long while the clock on the workday keeps ticking.
• Meals and sleep planned around a cab, a lot, and a shower line.
• Birthdays, games, and holidays spent a few states from home.
• Weather and traffic that turn a short run into a long one.

None of that shows up on the invoice. Drivers carry it anyway, load after load.

Simple ways to thank a driver this week

Thanking a driver does not take much. A few small habits go a long way.

• Leave room when merging near a truck, and skip the last-second cut and brake.
• Give a driver backing into a dock a minute without the horn.
• Say thanks at the truck stop, and cover a driver’s coffee if you can.
• Share a driver’s story online and tag it #thankatrucker.

If you work with drivers or have one in the family, a thoughtful gift a driver can actually use means more than a token gesture. Think a good travel mug, a comfortable seat cushion, or a gift card for a truck-friendly stop.
