ELD News: Pork producers push ELD delays

Just three days from the ELD mandate, numerous exemption requests and delay requests are still awaiting decisions–specifically, the National Pork Producers.

Cattle haulers and agricultural commodity haulers have, however, received word from the FMCSA, who released their final ruling Friday morning (today, December, 15, 2017). The ruling allows for cattle haulers and agricultural commodity haulers to go without ELDs until March 18, 2018. Agricultural commodities are defined in 49 CFR 395.2 and are granted state exemptions as well for hours of service. Livestock haulers, including bees and other agricultural commodity haulers, will need to print out, and have on hand, the extension document. You can find that here.

Don’t get blitzed!

In 2017, Safety Blitzes accounted for over 50,000 citations and/or trucks and drivers being put out of service.

Avoid becoming a statistic: The FMCSA, DOT, and National Highway Transportation Safety Administration all announce when blitzes will be and what they cover. Stay up to date with these announcements. Make sure your vehicle is current on its maintenance and your loads are secure, and you can eliminate (or minimally mitigate) lengthy and potentially drastic consequences handed down by the CVSA.

Truck Tech: Is blockchain worth the hype?

From Tesla and Nikola’s electric and semi-autonomous vehicle to ELDs, the trucking industry is square in the sights of numerous technological advancement companies.

Blockchain is being hailed as the next wave of tracking and recording loads. Considered secure in automating the supply chain and its visibility, Blockchain eliminates the need for physical documentation and instead allows for easy—secure—digital access of needed documents.

Those against Blockchain point to its relatively new status and its lack of battle-tested security. Judging from a Bitcoin’s recent massive security breech (which uses Blockchain as its security measure), skeptics might just be right—for now anyway. Tesla pre-orders coming from the beer industry

Tesla has received another request for reservations for their new electric semi. Anheuser-Busch has reserved 40 of Tesla’s trucks. This is the most pre-orders Tesla has received from one company to date.
